Michael Stars Launched Printed Tees—and a Mobile Pop-Up Shop That’s Cruisin’ Thru the City

The brand known for basics is transitioning over to prints!

If you don’t have one of Michael Stars’ famed classic one-size-fits-all tees somewhere in your closet, you definitely didn’t come of age during the era of Laguna Beach and The O.C. But I, on the other hand, sure did—meaning every trendy boutique and high-end department store I entered during my college days had these $65 basics consistently on full display. Fast forward to 2021, and the brand just launched Michael Stars vintage tees to celebrate its 35th anniversary!

Unlike the solid-colored styles that made the brand a household name in the early aughts, these printed tees, crop tops and oversized tanks feature prints! And not just any prints. The designs are reminiscent of the brand’s originals, launched by late founder Michael Cohen—popularized from 1986 – early ’90s. Cohen was inspired by beautiful travels around the world with wife (and brand cofounder) Suzanne Lerner, who presently runs the company right here in the City of Angels (where it’s been stationed from the start). This is where she also operates their longstanding Michael Stars Foundation.

To honor the new launch and momentous milestone, the brand kicked off a Michael Stars Vintage Tees mobile pop-up truck, making its way through Southern California during the month of August. I had the pleasure of being invited out to the Melrose Place stop in front of Alfred Coffee, where I was gifted a tee and hat of my choice. The Bali tee was a personal must with iconic designs that speak to my ’80s-born soul. And naturally, had to snag the pink vintage trucker hat, too!

If you haven’t stumbled upon the truck just yet, you still have time. Tomorrow (Aug. 21), it will be at Alfred Studio City from 9am – 2pm; Sunday (Aug. 22), it will be at Alfred Brentwood (9am – 2pm); and Thurs. (Aug. 26) and Fri. (Aug. 27), it will be in Montecito. It previously made pitstops in Silverlake, Santa Monica and Calabasas.
